Buckfast Abbey

Buckfast Abbey

Buckfast has been home to an abbey since 1018.

The monastery was surrendered during Henry VIII disolution in 1539, the buildings were stripped and left as ruins, before eventually demolished.

In 1882 the site was purchased by a group of French Benedictine monks, who refounded the monastery on the same site. New buildings and a temporary church were constructed incorporating the existing Gothic house. Work on a new abbey , which was constructed mostly on the footprint of the former abbey, started in 1907 and was consecrated in 1932 though not completed until 1938.
